She searched the various native dialects and deriving its name from the Eskimo words for "little dog", she christened the masked creature "Klee Kai".

This is an article which every present, past and future dog owner should read. No matter how much you think you know about dogs, there is always the possibility of a miscommunication. This will help everyone prevent the mistakes made by owners or visitors which lead to the problems caused by this miscommunication.

Anyone contemplating the addition of a Klee Kai to their family might want to read about some of our owner's experiences with our dear little dogs.

In the past, I have had a little pup returned who is a perfectly normal Klee Kai puppy. Some people just don't get that these are high energy dogs. They fall in love with the way they look and the size they are while forgetting that they crave and sometimes even demand a lot of attention from their people. They're like having a two year old so you must be prepared to direct that energy in the right direction. Their minds are constantly going and they are constantly finding things to keep themselves busy. Sometimes that's a bad thing, but for owners who realize this is what they are getting, it's great.

I would like for everyone who has made a reservation to reassess their decision to reserve a Klee Kai. If you did not understand that these are high energy dogs who can not just grow up outside like lots of dogs are left to do, I want you to withdraw your reservation. I will return your deposit. To me, it is more important that my dogs get a permanent home, than to keep the deposit of someone who has changed their mind for this reason. Please, be absolutely sure that these are the qualities you want in your dog. Having a 2 year old for life can be an awesome responsibility for some people.

A Special Note of Thanks

I want everyone to know that I have been so pleased with the caliber of people responding to this breed. The sense of responsibility has not been hard to convey. Everyone is giving very careful thought as to the ability of the Klee Kai to fit into their space and the ability of the family to meet the needs of the Klee Kai.

When I first saw these dogs I too thought that they were the greatest and that people would react to them just as all of you have. Now all we have to do is be very careful to keep this from getting out of control and ruining the breed. With the help of all the loving people who have responded to this page, I think we can keep this the excellent breed that it is at present. We have only an occasional minor cosmetic defect at the present, let's do our best to keep it that way. Thank you all!!

Celinda McCormick is very interested in the Klee Kai breed and has set up a Klee Kai list. Many dogs go to their new homes, only to have an early end come to their lives. Therefore, I think that it is very important to include a page which will help everyone learn the technique to teach your dog to come on command.

There is a temporary moritorium on importing this product from Sweden because of 9/11.  So, just keep checking because I am quite certain they will be back.

All Breed Rescue Pages

If you'd like to put a photo, etc. on our All Breed Rescue Page please e-mail me, and we can arrange to do that. This page was originally set up for Klee Kai who are retiring or need rehoming because they were returned to me. Since then I have decided to add the All Breed Rescue feature in order to help all abandoned animals. Therefore, you will find that these animals are being adopted for a fee, however, they are not the source of income except to recouperate the expenses associated with spaying, neutering, shots, training, etc. Whatever is needed to make these dogs adoptable is considered part of that expense.

Neither of these are commercial ventures, just love ventures. Please also bear in mind that I am quite busy and only have so much space for these ventures. So, if I fail to post something it will because I've run out of time or space. I'll do my very best to help all I can.

Speaking of love, many pet owners love their pets so much that they'd like to have a portrait of their pet. This lady apparently doesn't even advertise and came to me highly recommended. So, take and look at Janelle's site. Get your order in early for Christmas. This is the kind of present which has to be ordered well in advance.

For your protection and peace of mind and because of the growing popularity and desirability of these dogs it is becoming a real concern that we will begin to experience more incidences of dognapping. We have had one dog stolen from it's yard in Portland Oregon. We had two people lose their Klee Kais. (Klee Kai are great escape artists. I've seen them actually unweave a chain link fence to get to the female in the next kennel. I've also seen a female hold a chain link fence up and pull it in so a male could come through between the fence and the concrete below.)

So, as you can see, anyone can lose their Klee Kai due to their dogs own cunningness. The people who found those dogs didn't want to give them back to the rightful owners. Needless to say, if the people had wanted to push it, they could have made the owners go to court to get their dogs back. Absolute proof would have been hard to come by without a tattoo, nose print, a micro-chip or DNA code. Besides tattooing, I am beginning to furnish the DNA code with puppies. I also have another story about someone in California who was walking her Klee Kai. Some lady walked up to her and said "You've found my dog." The Klee Kai owner said "This is my dog." To which the fake says "No really, this is my dog." So the owner says "OK, let's go to my house and get the tattoo papers and call the police." Well needless to say, this was the end of the story, but could have turned out different if we didn't take the precautions that we have.

It is a plus that it is illegal for any lab to perform testing on an animal which has been tattooed and Animal Shelters will contact Tatoo-A-Pet. For these reasons, I have begun tattooing all dogs before they leave my property. Therefore, please be sure to add the price of the tatooing and lifetime registration which is $20.00 to any price quoted for any Klee Kai being adopted. This will also protect the new owners while the dog or pup is in transit to his/her new home because my tattoo is instantly recognizable to the registry. They will know I did the tattoo and that it came from the Washington area.

I was really thankful for the tattoo when one of my retiring females was being taken to her new home in California, through Oregon. She got lost on the Oregon, California border in Medford Oregon. Because of some good folks who rescued her running down the middle of a very busy road and the tattoo, she was back home in slightly more than 24 hours, only because it was an 11 hour drive to go get her and bring her home.

For people who have beloved pets already, check with your vet, they can usually refer you to a tattooist in your area.  I have also begun micro-chipping my dogs.  It is a good idea to use both of these methods for identification.  The tatoo in case people cannot get to a scanner.  The micro-chip would be used to identify your dog if the tatoo becomes a bit obscure.  Sometimes the tattoo is hard to read when the dog grows up unless it's retouched at adult hood.
